TABLES OF POPULATION AND STANDING ROOM.
The following tables give precise
information about huddling together in London, &c., according to the census
of 1851, though they tell us nothing about huddling in houses. Twenty per cent,
or one-fifth more, must now be added to. the whole population. In the low
districts this percentage will scarcely represent the increase of numbers grown
on the spot, or received from "improved" neighbourhoods. The tables
take the broad areas of districts and sub-districts, and are, therefore, no
guide to the overcrowding in particular corners of those districts.
